Scaling your business is not the same as being an expert in your business. In fact, many experts who come to work with me are total beginners when it comes to scaling. Meanwhile, there are other people making millions who aren’t even great at what they do!
That’s because of what I call: The Expert Dilemma.
This is where you’ve mastered your skill. You’ve put in the money, the time, the energy, and the dedication. Your clients get incredible results. You’ve got testimonials galore. Maybe you’re even booked solid, and you’ve hit a cap – a cap in your income, time, and energy.
That’s where you have to structure your business a little differently.
You’ll have to be willing to feel like a beginner. You’ll shift your perspective from a business owner to a CEO. But it’s going to be worth it when you’re able to steadily (and sustainably) scale your business 7 figures and beyond.
You are an expert at what you do. You've put in the time and the effort to master your skill. Whether you did that before or after starting a business, you now have years of experience, and countless testimonials on your side, but that's not all that it takes to scale. Being an expert isn't enough. In fact, some people make 1,000,000 who aren't even that great at what they do. Have you seen that? Have you seen others who are nowhere near the level of knowledge and experience that you have and they seem like they're further along. When that happens, it can be infuriating, and maybe you feel like a best kept secret. So how do you scale your expertise? This is what I call the expert dilemma, because you actually must unlearn some of what helps you become an expert.
And then you need to take a different approach to grow your business. Here's what I mean. I'm gonna share several different shifts that need to be made for you to scale a business as an expert. Okay. The 1st shift is actually going from expert to beginner. Sure, you're an expert at what you do, but you're not an expert at scaling your business. If you were, you'd already have that result. You'd already have scaled your business.
In order to grow your business, You're going to have to approach things like a beginner. You must be willing to learn, to not have all the answers, Be open to asking questions or asking for support. You have to be open and coachable and embrace all of the uncomfortable feelings. They're gonna come with feeling like a beginner again. You can be an expert at what you do, but you have to show up as a beginner as it relates to scaling and growing your business. The second thing is action versus knowledge. Scaling doesn't happen by reading and studying or even coaching alone. There's no amount of knowledge that you can amass that will scale the business for you.
You must take action, and you must take that action before you feel like an expert at scaling. You must take that action before You feel completely confident in each step. You'll need to take action even when you don't know the full plan, but action will bring clarity. Action will show you your next steps. You won't be able to plan out every move first. You just have to get started. So stop consuming, start taking action, and let the journey be your teacher. 3rd is progress over perfection.
You learn by doing, and that means you can't backed perfection. As an expert, you probably have incredibly high standards. Perhaps you've mastered what you do to the point that there's a very small margin of error. But when you're learning something new, when you're learning to scale your business, you're going to make mistakes. You will fail and then reframe that as a lesson. That failure is necessary. It's a necessary part of building experience and scaling and learning the lessons that will take you to 7 figures plus. So embrace imperfection, and don't hold yourself to an impossible standard as you're learning something brand new, because there are going to be so many new concepts as you're learning to grow.
4th, simple versus complex. It took you years to become an expert, right? It didn't happen overnight. You've seen it all. You know exactly what to do. It's nuanced. It's complex. And when you're working with your own clients or customers, you know how to handle any situation. The thing is that it can be difficult to explain everything simply, but that's exactly what you must do.
Your brain's going to want to make everything sound more complex, kind of this backwards way of honoring all the work that you put into becoming an expert and to make it seem more important, to make people think that they need your help because it's so difficult, but an expert can take the most complex concepts and then communicate them clearly and simply. Experts can distill their expertise down into a simple to follow process that feels doable for your people. It helps others see that they can get results. And that brings me to my 5th point, results without you. Not only will you help others see that they can get results, but they'll actually see that they can get results without working with you 1 on 1. You can package your expertise. You can deliver it in a way that others can learn and apply everything that you're teaching without requiring you to be there every step of the way. You don't have to hold their hand.
You don't have to do it for them. It's possible for you to teach them how to think in how to approach situations to apply your framework themselves instead of relying on you to be there and tell them what to do. These are all of the ways that as an expert showing up to scale a business, You're going to have to reframe your thinking. To become an expert who can scale to 7 figures and multiple 7 figures, You need to go from expert to beginner. You need to take action versus focusing on creating more knowledge. You need to focus on progress over perfection. You need to embrace the simple versus making everything so complex, and you need to learn how to create results without
