If things look and sound different around here, that’s because they are! The difference may not be huge, but it is significant. I am only removing 4 little letters from the name of my podcast and Facebook group but those 4 letters represent a lot as far as what I stand for.
Here’s how all this all got started. I did an interview on another podcast and prepared to share my expertise around marketing and mindset. The interviewer surprised me, however, with the questions they asked. I responded well to the questions, but I still left feeling as though the interviewer missed the bigger picture of the expertise I offer. In some ways, however, I was responsible for the questions being asked at all.
You see, the focus of the interview centered on gender, and that I am a female entrepreneur working with other female entrepreneurs. It never occurred to me that by focusing on Lit “Ladies” it would appear as though I was averse to working with any other genders or gender identities.
I contributed to the problem without fully realizing it. Now I am aware, I will no longer be branding my business as the Lit Ladypreneurs, instead, we will just be the entrepreneurs.
Before I go into my reasoning, I first want to say that this is a very personal decision for me and should have no impact on your business. If you only want to work with women, go for it! But, if after hearing my reasons you feel in your gut you want to make a shift as well, you have my support. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong to niche down by gender. What I am saying is that it no longer feels right for me!
Now, here are the reasons I’ve made this decision!
Hey hey! If things look and sound just a little bit different around here, well, that's because they are. Here's how this all got started. I had a guest interview, and I was fully prepared to share my expertise around marketing and mindset. I was surprised by a couple of the questions that I was asked, although, quite frankly, I admit I really shouldn't have been so surprised. Immediately, I knew where I stood, and I answered honestly and without hesitation. And I handled All the questions really well, but I still left with this feeling as though both the interview missed the bigger picture of the expertise that I offer, and, also, I had some responsibility for why those questions came up to begin with.
You see, the focus was all around gender. And the mere fact that I'm a woman means I'm going to continue to field some of these questions, but I also realize where I need to make changes in my own niche and positioning in order to better align with my values on these topics. Bottom line, I was contributing to the problem that I see, and I decided I'm not going to niche down based on gender anymore. So that means, yes, I'm changing the podcast title, my Facebook group, and a lot of my other marketing language to reflect that decision. Now before I share my reasons why, I first wanna say that this is a very personal decision, and you do you. If you only wanna work with women, Go for it. But if after hearing my reasons you feel in your gut that you want to make a shift as well, you would also have my support. I'm not saying it's right or wrong to niche down by gender.
What I am saying is that it no longer feels right for me. So, what are the questions that we're asking? Why did I make this decision? There are a few reasons. One, I'm an entrepreneur, just as brilliant, successful, and capable as any man, and I increasingly felt out of alignment with the word ladypreneur and other similar phrases as well. I never really related to being called mompreneur, and then others just don't feel right. They seem to miss the mark. And while I'm not personally offended by any of these and don't mind if other people use them, I just realized it doesn't feel authentic for me to use that because I don't need a qualifier. I don't want a different title or a different arena to play in. I'm an entrepreneur.
Number 2, I don't need protection or a safe environment. I'm not intimidated by men. I've managed Them partnered with them and coached men throughout my career, and I just don't feel that I need a separate space. In fact, I really appreciate the differences that men bring. And while I value equality so highly, I, at no Point, want to make it seem as though men don't have a role to play or that we should be scared of men. Now there are a lot of things that have happened, right, to women across the world, and There are a lot of things that you face. But in business, in my group, my group isn't the place. My business isn't the place to address those.
I don't feel that I need to create this bubble for my clients separate from men any longer. I don't think that that's what's going to serve them best because that's not reality in the business world. I originally went in this direction after market research Where I heard that women wanted a safe space to express their emotions, etcetera, etcetera. But by creating an exclusively women community, I'm not actually helping them handle the fears and the limiting beliefs that they have around this. I'm enabling those. So, yes, there is a time and a place for separate environments, especially where healing is involved. But this is business. And if you want to build a successful business, you can't do it in a bubble, so I'm not called to create that anymore.
I feel compelled to help you face it and to help you build that business in spite of any of the fears or limiting beliefs that you may have. Now the third reason is I'm a damn good mom, but my kids are not my why. And, no, my coaching isn't primarily about How to balance it all or the guilt from working as a mom. In fact, in my own marketing, I don't focus a lot on the fact that I even have kids. Not as though I'm trying to hide it, but that's not the center of my brand. And that's because I love my children, But I also love my business, and I view them as distinctly separate. I'm building this business, first and foremost, because it's a dream of mine. And, yes, it's going to have an incredible impact on my kids and my husband and my clients and the world but first and foremost, it's got to be for me.
And, yeah, I was asked If my coaching is all about how to balance it all or dealing with guilt from working as a mom or all of those, quote, unquote, women issues, and it pissed me off. I could feel the blood boiling inside of me. I don't wanna feel the questions from men who think that that's all I do. And I also don't wanna be judged by women who've called me a bad mom for going after my dreams. I've had both sides. Do these topics come up? Sure. But my coaching is about how to go after what you want. And for my clients, that means building a business that is successful as fuck.
And I don't think you have to sacrifice your family to get it. You get both. And when I was asked that question on that interview, I answer the same way I'm gonna answer anytime I'm asked in the future. Yeah. I'm gonna continue to be asked these questions because I'm a woman, But no one asks my husband how he balances it all or if he feels guilty for working. My coaching centers around the same thing that it would for anyone who's building a successful business. Number 4, which really breaks my heart, I have been asked if I would turn away someone who's transgender. Now I hate that this even had to come up, that because of the language in my marketing, that this question even needs to be asked.
Gender identity has no bearing on my clients' ability nor my willingness or desire to help them build a wildly profitable business that lights them up. If that's what you want, I can help you. Let's go. Let's do it. I'm not here to discriminate based on how you identify from a gender perspective. It doesn't matter. I didn't feel a compelling reason why I only needed to work with women. In fact, I've worked with men throughout my career.
So bottom line, sure, I'm going to take a stand if and when asked about any of these topics, But I don't want my brand to contribute to these questions actually being raised. I feel like this is the right move for my business, And you can expect me to get back to talking about what I do best, helping you blow up your business in a really good way. I hope all of this Helps you understand why I'm making the shift in my business. And what I would say is follow your gut because I ignored Myself, when I had some thoughts before about, I'm really not sure if I want to niche down only to women. And ultimately, obviously, I decided to go that path. But if you're questioning from the beginning Any decision, not just this, any decision, pay attention. If something doesn't quite feel right, then over time, it's not going to go away. It's just going to be magnified.
And one of the reasons one of the times that you know that it makes sense to pivot is when it's out of alignment. So if you wanna be an independent, wildly successful business owner, if you're ready To work on your mindset, if you need a clear strategy, then let's do it. I'm going to niche down still, but it's gonna be in ways that are in service to my clients. It's gonna be by type of business, Length of time in business so that I can really find the sweet spot of where I serve my clients best, where my expertise is gonna be most beneficial. That's my game plan, and you may not agree with it. And I I'm not asking you to agree with it. You do you. But this is my business.
This is how I want to run things, and I hope that you can respect that and still get a ton of value, and if not, that's okay. You don't have to listen. You don't have to join my group. But I know that there are those out there who are going to feel me, who are going to relate to this hardcore. And if that's you, then you're my people.
