I have 3 reasons why your marketing isn’t working.
Everywhere that you turn online, I know that you're seeing advice on the one thing that you need
to grow your business, to attract clients, and to create success. And I know you've tried some of them too, and you've wondered why they didn't work for you. You felt frustrated. You've considered giving up and just throwing in the towel. But all along, it wasn't you. You're trying all of these things that you're reading about that you're hearing about and you feel like, well, if they worked for others, then it must be me. I must be the reason why this isn't working, and it's just not gonna happen for me. But I'm here to tell you that that's not the case.
I have 3 different reasons that I'm gonna share today about why your marketing isn't working. Number 1, You're basing your marketing off of what worked for someone else. At the surface, that seems like a good idea. You think to yourself, well, if it worked for them, it must work for me, but that's so wrong. Whether you read a blog post or you talk to a friend or you even Hired someone. If you make your decision solely based on the fact that it worked for them and you decide to blindly give that same strategy a try, you might be in trouble. Your business, your audience, your industry, your offers, budget, timing, mindset, and goals are all different, and your marketing approach should be customized based on those elements because Your marketing depends on all of these. So just because it worked for them does not mean it's going to work for you.
You need a strategy customized to you. It's great to read and learn and listen online, but some people share very specific strategies as if they are the very thing that will take your business from just starting out to $1,000,000 or more. And maybe that strategy did that for someone, but there are reasons why that worked, and there are reasons why it won't work. It makes me cringe when someone creates their own business, are successful doing so, and then decide to turn themselves into a business coach and teach everything that they learned in their own business as if that's the gospel and as if it will work for everyone. I've spent More than a decade, going on 15 years studying marketing, the ins and the outs in every option, every approach, I know that there are so many ways to create success with marketing, but there are different ways that work for different types of businesses, with different audiences, with different goals, different budgets, the time of year, or even the time within their business based on the mindset, the preferences of the business owner, the type of offer, the price point. There are so many nuances. And that's what I've spent my entire career studying and implementing. I know there's no one way.
There's no cookie cutter approach that will work for everyone. There's no one size fits all. So if you're basing your marketing off of what worked for someone else without factoring in all of those different elements that are unique to your business, that might be why it's not working for you. Now get this. Here's the second reason your marketing might not be working. And if that one wasn't compelling enough, then What's crazy is that another reason might be that you're doing what you've always done. Yeah. That's right.
If you're basing your marketing off of what worked For you before, it might not work. Isn't that crazy? Not even what worked for you in the past will always work for you in the future. That's why there's the saying, what got you here won't get you there, As you and your business, your goals, consumer behavior, the industry technology, even marketing itself evolves, You will need to evolve as well. Your strategy will have to adapt. So if you're doing what you've done before, Even if it worked for you before and it's not working now, that might be the reason it's not working. Things have changed. Things have evolved, and you haven't evolved with it. The third reason is maybe you're missing ingredients.
As I said, there's no cookie cutter approach, but there is a tried and true formula. It's a framework that outlines the different elements needed within your marketing while still giving you the flexibility to customize your approach and your plan within each element. I'll give an analogy here. I recently had a birthday, and so cake is top of mind. Imagine that you're making a cake and you carefully follow each step to make the most delicious icing and all of these edible flowers and decorations. And you spend all of this time envisioning how this cake will look and creating all of these decorations, only to realize you're missing the actual cake. Let's look at another example. Maybe you obsess over making several layers of cake.
And you wanna make sure that they're the right height and the right width so that they all match and you're making sure that they're all turning out just right. They're cooked well, but not overdone. And you're really obsessing over making sure you get it right, only to realize at the end of the day that you have nothing to hold these different layers of cake together. And the thing is even within this framework of making a cake, kneading the cake and icing and filling and decorations, I mean, really, as long as you have each of those elements, you have a cake. You're successful. You make a cake, but you have the flexibility within each element to customize it. And think about how many different types of cakes there are in the world and what will work for each person based on their preferences. There are all of these options, but yet, they're also cake.
The same is true in marketing. There are certain elements that you need to have in order for it to actually work, for it to be considered true marketing that's actually doing its job. But oftentimes, you obsess over one element and then forget the bigger picture and leave out another element entirely. Maybe you're building out one aspect of your client attraction plan, only to realize later you're missing another element completely. Might sound silly, but it happens all the time. You may be doing it and you don't even realize it. Maybe you're getting carried away obsessing over and tweaking your website with no priority on sending traffic to it, or maybe you're consistently showing up on Instagram and growing your followers, but have no plan in place to convert those followers into clients. Maybe you're promoting and selling and then selling and promoting some more while making no money because you aren't reaching enough people.
