Staying in control is a major factor holding your business back. Tune in to this episode to get tangible strategies and tips around how to build and delegate to your team so you can reach your next level.
When you started your business, you were a team of 1, acting as the coach, copywriter, graphic designer, web developer, admin, bookkeeper, and probably more.
As time progresses, it becomes necessary to bring on team members to help. As you hire, you have a decision to make – do you micromanage and control your team? Or do you fully delegate?
You know delegation is the way, but it’s hard to release control! Trust me, I totally understand. That’s why today I will show you how to release control and delegate so you can GROW!
In the beginning, having control over every aspect of your business is not just necessary as a solopreneur. It's reassuring. You know what's going on. You have everything under control, and it just feels really good. You know the ins and outs of everything. You're making all the decisions. and you're literally hands on with everything from sales and marketing to operations and customer service. You're doing it all.
But what happens when your business starts to grow? Growth demands change. And as your time becomes more limited being the go to person for everything is just simply unsustainable. You have a decision to make when that happens. Control or growth. That's the 2 choices. Right? The challenge is that many business owners try to go after both. They wanna grow, they set big goals, they map out all of their plans, letting go of control, However, it's easier said than done and they find themselves saying, only I can do this. Only I can serve this client only I can make that decision.
Only I can write the marketing copy. Only I can close the sale. The thing is these only I statements become barriers to grow that they're left unchallenged. And even if they are challenged, sometimes I hear them morph into Other statements that are just as harmful. Statements like it's easier if I. It's better if I. It's faster if I. All of these statements maintain one thing.
Control. But as with most things in life, and business, when you say yes to one thing, you're saying no to something else. And that's the case with control. When you choose control, you limit growth. By holding the reins too tightly, you literally hold your business back from what's possible. What keeps you from letting go Most of the time, it's fear. You're afraid of what's gonna happen when you delegate and you go to a worst case scenario. You start to think things like if I'm not involved, my client won't be happy, and they'll leave, and they'll work with someone else, or you think If I'm not involved, the quality of work will decline, and my reputation will suffer, and no one else is gonna wanna work with us.
You might think If I'm not involved, mistakes are gonna be made, and that's gonna cost us so much time and money. And I simply can't afford that. And you think that instead by staying involved in every aspect of the business, you can personally insure The quality is maintained, customers are happy, and mistakes are avoided. And you might be able to a point But, ultimately, control is an illusion. Eventually, you'll find that even when you're in charge and doing or reviewing everything. Clients will still be unhappy at times, mistakes will still be made, and some work just isn't gonna be up to par. And on top of that, on top of all of that, you're exhausted. So it doesn't turn out like you hoped.
But you can choose a different path. You can set your business up to grow beyond what you're capable of doing and managing on your own by hiring, delegating, -- trusting, empowering, and leading others. In other words, you can learn how to achieve results through other people. And when you do, not only is growth no longer limited, but clients have a better experience, fewer mistakes are made, quality of work improves, All while you're finally experiencing the white space to focus on what you do the best or what you want to spend your time on. And that's because You have people who are more talented, have more experience, and who can focus more of their time on their specific role instead of dividing their attention between all of their responsibilities. which is what ultimately you're doing when you're the CEO trying to do it all. In the beginning, clinging to control might seem like the safest path. but it limits the potential of your business and often leads to burnout.
The real path to scaling lies in your ability to trust and delegate. So surround yourself with a talented team that you can empower and guide, and that's gonna open up opportunities for exponential growth. It's about shifting your mindset from only I can to who else can in making the courageous decision. It really truly is a courageous decision to elevate yourself to the role of CEO. Not just the title, but the actual role of CEO. Letting go doesn't mean losing control. It means gaining the capacity to lead, to innovate, and to take your business further. The choice between control and growth isn't just a business decision.
I want you to hear this. It is not just a business decision. It is an important one. It's a strategic one. It's an intentional one. It's a decision that I recommend. But beyond all of that, it's also a declaration of your vision for the future and your commitment to making it a reality. When you have a vision for what's possible, when you see your business growing well beyond you, and you step up into your CEO role and learn how to let go, you're demonstrating that commitment to making that vision.
A reality. Okay? I hope that you take this with you this week, and you choose -- growth over control. You look for the opportunities to let go and know that when you let go, you're opening yourself and your business up for growth.
