Do you really know what you want in life and business? Today, I am sharing five reasons why you need clarity around what you want!
Kathryn Binkley:
Let's chat about getting what you want. And this is in life and business. Of course, I'm gonna relate it to business, but I'm gonna start out with a story from real life. And please tell me I'm not the only one. So I can't count how many times I've Been hungry and went to the kitchen and didn't see anything anything at all that I wanted. And so I I walk up to my husband, Kenny, and I say, hey, Kenny. Can you run to the store and get some groceries? We really need some groceries. And I have an incredible husband, so he's always willing to run errands and do things.
Kathryn Binkley:
So he'll often say, sure. What do you want? And I'm like, I don't know. I don't know what I want. And he's like, well, just text me a list. Like, I'll head out. Just text me a list of of what it is that you want. And so I started to think about it, and I'm fiddling and maybe list a couple of things. And All of a sudden, he walks back into the house with groceries.
Kathryn Binkley:
And I know the worst thing ever is when I walk in there, and I'm like, well, why didn't you get x, or why didn't you get y? And he's like, well, you didn't ask for it. And the reality is that I sent him off to get something. And I didn't even really know what I wanted. The bottom line is before you can get what you want, You have to know what you want. And that sounds so incredibly simple, but you have no idea how many women I speak to who aren't 100% clear on what it is that they want in life and business. So today, let's let's dive into that some more. Let's talk about how to get what you want. First, why do you even need to know what you want? So here are 5 reasons that you need clarity around what you want.
Kathryn Binkley:
1st, and we already covered it, but just to rephrase it, you're more likely to get what you want when you Actually, know what you want. Right? Again, it sounds simple, but is it true? You know it is. Number 2. You will make better decisions. When you know what you want, the decisions that you make are going to help you towards Your goals is gonna help you to get what you want because you're making decisions in light of the clarity that you have around exactly what it is that you want. Let's look at business for a moment. Let's say that you decide to launch a podcast. Well, when you're looking at opportunities and you're evaluating different educational opportunities.
Kathryn Binkley:
Maybe the right thing to invest in is something that's going to help you get this podcast off the ground. Versus if you didn't have clarity around what it is that you wanted this quarter or this month, Then you may likely invest in something else that sounds good, but isn't as high of a priority. So you'll make even better decisions. And that leads right into the next item. You're actually gonna save time, money, and energy. When you make better decisions and it's based on what you want. It's inevitable that you're gonna save time. It's inevitable that you're going to save energy and money and any other resources that you have.
Kathryn Binkley:
The 4th reason that you need clarity around what you want is that it's actually gonna narrow focus. There are so many things that you can get distracted by in business. You ever heard of shiny object syndrome? Sure you have. Now that might mean that you're looking around at what others are doing. You hear someone talk about what worked for them. You quickly get distracted, and you decide to work on something else. Something else sounds great, or it's the latest and greatest new thing that came out. Right? Well, that's not always what you should focus on because maybe that's not the highest priority in relation to your goals.
Kathryn Binkley:
And so knowing what you want as you to focus in. You get to focus in on exactly the things that are gonna help you. And 5th, It allows you to create a strategic plan. You get focused action steps to move towards your goal when you have a plan in place and you know what you want. So then how do you figure out what it is that you want? Well, there are a few exercises that I've used with clients in the past, and I'm gonna share some of those here today. Now you may wanna grab a journal because each and every one of these questions make excellent journaling prompts for you. Now my first question is, If you could do anything you wanted to do today, what would you do? How would you spend your day if you had no other obligations, no one else asking for you or calling on you? How do you choose to spend your day? Describe your perfect day, and really describe it in great detail. What time would you wake up down to the minute? What would you choose to wear today? Shoes, purse, how would you wear your hair? All of those things It's super specific.
Kathryn Binkley:
Would you work? And if so, how many hours would you work? Where would you work? What would you work on? When you think about the food that you're gonna eat, would you go out to eat? What do you cook? What meals would you serve? Really imagine in great detail what your perfect day would look like. Now the 2nd question is very closely related, but I like to phrase it in different ways because it brings out different things. So The next question is, what lights you up? What makes you happy? I talk a lot about building a business and a life that light you up. So what does that mean to you? What would that mean? When you think bigger picture beyond just a single day, what would your life look like? What would your business look like? When we talk about business, do you really want to work with clients 1 on 1, or would you rather create more leveraged or passive income streams. Do you wanna work from home? Or do you wanna travel all over the world and speak? You have so many options. So when you imagine the business that you want and the life that you want, what does that look like? The third question I have for you is, what would you do if you knew you wouldn't fail? If failure was not an option, there is no way that you would even be afraid to fail. What would you set off to do today? What would you decide? Maybe there's some dream within you, something that you really you wanted to do, you've thought about doing for a long time, but something's been holding you back. You're nervous that you might fail or that it just might not go well.
Kathryn Binkley:
We'll get rid of all the fears. What are those things? What do you wanna do? What would you do if you couldn't fail? The 4th question I have for you is, if I handed you $1,000,000,000, what would you do with it? What would you do? How would that change your life? What would you choose to do? What would you start doing? What would you stop doing? How would your life look different? And what would you choose? 5th, I'd like you to make a list of some things that you don't want. Because sometimes with our mindset, let's be real, it's easy to come up with a long list of things that we know we don't want. And sometimes it's maybe a little bit easier to say what we don't want than what we do want. So I want you to list all of the things that you don't want, but you can't stop there. Here's the trick. After you make the list of the things that you don't want, I need you to flip those around. Reverse them and switch them into things that you do want.
Kathryn Binkley:
Rephrase them all into things that you are working towards instead of running away from. What is it that you do want? Lastly, make a list of 30 things at least, 30 things minimum that you would spend money on for yourself. Oftentimes, when we think about what it is that we want, we may come up with a vague goal, like an amount of money or making more money. Or maybe we come up with a list of things that are really for other people, that are gonna make other people happy, our husband, our kids, our parents. At the end of the day, It's not really about the money at all. And as great as it is to help other people, you've gotta do some things for yourself. To really be motivated, it's gotta be something for you. So I want you to make a list of at least 30 things that you would spend money on.
Kathryn Binkley:
You may or may not have heard the phrase, money flows where there is purpose. So if you want to make more money in your business, how How do you intend on spending it? What are 30 things that you can spend it on that are for you? And it doesn't mean you only have to spend the money on you once you make it. But, hey, that gives you some motivation to move forward, and it gives you clarity in what it is that you want and why you want to make this extra money in your business. After you have this list of things that you want, I have 1 final question for you. Do you really want those things? And, I mean, really? It's easy to say that you want something because someone else said that they wanted it or someone else recommended it where you feel like that's just the right thing to do. But at the end of the day, it's gotta be something that you want. If you don't want it, that you're not actually going to take the action that's necessary to get it. And no matter how much you think you want it, it's actually quite possible that you're fooling yourself.
Kathryn Binkley:
I've seen this time and time again. I'll give an example where there was a woman that I spoke with once, and she was so excited about building her business. She wanted to build her business. And when I asked her why, why she wanted to grow her business, and how much money she needed to make in order to do that. When it all came down to it, it really boiled down to being able to change her schedule. She wanted to be able to change her schedule so she could be home with her kids when they got home from school. Now the thing that was really interesting to me is that she'd been working on her business for a while, and she hadn't made progress. And if the goal was as simple as spending more time with her kids and being there when they got off of the school bus.
Kathryn Binkley:
What she was actually doing was counterproductive to that. She was spending more time working on her business plus working her full time job. And she actually hadn't yet met that goal of being home when her kids got home from school. The easier way to solve that problem would just be to get a different job. Just get a different full time job that allowed that flexibility in time or in scheduling. And so she did. She switched jobs, and she was able to be home with her kids. And that was the right thing for her to do.
Kathryn Binkley:
She thought she wanted a business because you hear that creating a business gives you that freedom, and it it does and it can. It's not always easy building a business. I mean, you know that. Right? You've experienced that. It's hard work sometimes to build a business. So you have to really, really want it. So when you say you want it, When you say you want all of these things, the last question again is, do you really want it? Because no matter what, I can't make you want it, and I can't want it for you more than you want it for yourself. So make sure that you're clear on what you want and that you really want it.
Kathryn Binkley:
Because before you can get what you want, you have to know what you really want.
